ELEPHANT SEALS & WINERIES

Feb. 20-Feb 21, 2015

Warm early morning sun, cool off shore breeze, gentle lapping sounds of the waves running up the sandy beach and the boisterous ” it’s all about me” barking of the less than beautiful male elephant seals. Ah, what a great day it was. Two weeks ago the seals were just beginning to populate the beaches near Cambria. Mary and I were doing the pre-shoot survey for the February workshop and spent the day shooting their early season antics. Mating seemed to be the last thing on their minds that day. Basking in the sun was their priority. A few young males strutted along the beaches but no territorial disputes yet. The seals were easily seen from our vantage points on the bluffs overlooking the beaches. Workshop guests will get great shots even with 200mm lenses on cropped sensor cameras. Longer lenses are advised but don’t let that deter you from coming.

Instructors will be available for advice on all aspects of photography while we shoot seals, macro, and wildlife images. There is also a chance of seeing zebras, yes zebras.

Zebras

If macro, long lens, or wildlife is something you want to try, this is an opportunity for instruction.

Shooting Saturday morning will work up an appetite and powerful thirst guaranteed. The coastal town of Cambria has plenty of eateries to satisfy the group. Downtown Paso Robles has well established restaurants and a wonderful selection of wine tasting rooms from many of the local wineries.

There is an additional opportunity at a local winery known for its sculpture.

The afternoon will be spent getting tips on composition, Lightroom tips and constructive critiques on our images. Bring up to 5 images for optional critique. A jump drive for the images would be helpful.

I was using a new Tamron 150-600mm borrowed from Lew Held, Northern California’s sales rep which made capturing head shots easy and fast. Focusing is quick and lens is lightweight for it’s range not to mention affordable. Mary used Tamron’s new 16-300mm, easily hand held due to the VC (Vibration Compensation) and 450mm equivalent on her Nikon 5000 body. Patrick uses his 500mm on a full frame Canon.

Sunday morning we will be available for additional photo and post processing tips and consultation.

Logistics Information

There are a number of motels and hotels in Paso Robles for any budget. The instructors will be staying at the newly renovated Motel 6 in Paso Robles. There will be a no host, Friday evening, get acquainted dinner at Odyssey World Cafe. Details provided upon sign-up.
