Imitation is the highest form of flattery

Comparison is the thief of happiness

I led a recent photo shoot to Boomeria (www.Boomeria.com) and as I was reviewing photos from the other participants . I was struck by the truth in both of these quotes. As I looked at some of the photos, I thought, ‘Oh, I I could have, or should have done that’. It is from looking at other photos that we grow in our ability. But at the same time, it tends to rob us of the happiness of what we have done ourselves.

This is a psychologically difficult place to hold, being happy with what we have done, and still being able to learn by comparing ourselves to others. It is also a way that we continue to grow and evolve in our craft.

Below are several photos and commentary on what I could have done that I learned from looking at the photos that others took.

In the image above the flash that lit the throne was not gelled, and so the light is too white, it needed to be yellower to mimic sunshine coming in a window.

This kids spiral slide was an amazing item to photograph, ranging from the various metal textures, to the curves, and the lighting.  I did not spend enough time trying out other variations; I saw other treatments of this slide that were quite impressive.  Shot from other angles, with on and off camera flash, black and white, color.

Pipe Organ innards

The above photo from the inside of the organ is interesting, but what would have the photo looked like if I had back lit instead?

It is this process of reflection that helps us to grow in our life as well as photography.
